About the coffee

OVERVIEW:
Discover the exquisite flavors of Ethiopia Shantawene Coffee, a product of Daye Bensa – a renowned coffee grower and exporter based in Ethiopia. This exceptional coffee, named after the Shantawene Village, has earned recognition, including a 7th place in the 2020 Cup of Excellence out of over 1,400 entries.

PRODUCER:
Daye Bensa, founded in 2006 by brothers Asefa and Mulugeta Dukamo, is at the heart of the Shantawene Village, exporting coffee from its farm and out-growers in the Shantawene, Karamo, and Bombe villages. The majority of the workforce, many of them women, hail from the Shantawene Village.

ALTITUDE AND LOCATIONS:<
The Daye Bensa coffee farm stretches between 1,900 and 2,217 meters, while the cherries delivered by out-growers come from even higher altitudes, ranging from 2,000 to 2,400 meters. Daye Bensa boasts 15 washing stations across three districts and manages all aspects of the coffee export process. The company's farms in Kaffa and Sidamo are certified for Organic, UTZ, Rainforest Alliance, and C.A.F.E. practices.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT:
Daye Bensa emphasizes community engagement through its annual Out-Growers Day, where nearly 1,000 farmers gather to celebrate their harvests and receive second payments for their contributions. Furthermore, the top three farmers from each of the three villages are recognized with certificates and cash prizes for consistently delivering high-quality cherries.

ROASTER'S NOTE: We enjoy roasting this coffee to a filter level to enjoy the sweet fruity qualities.

FUTURE INITIATIVES:
Daye Bensa has plans to collaborate with more farmers, particularly focusing on encouraging women in coffee farming. The company is also looking to partner with Hawassa University to conduct research aimed at enhancing coffee quality.
