Region: Nyeri County, Central Kenya, on the slopes of Mt. Kenya / Aberdare range. This lot comes from smallholder farmers delivering to the Gikanda Farmers’ Cooperative Society factories in the Nyeri highlands.
Process: Fully Washed. Cherries are pulped soon after delivery, fermented in water to break down mucilage, then washed clean and dried slowly on raised beds. The washed style in Nyeri is all about clarity, bright structure, and deep fruit sweetness.
Farm / Producer: Gikanda Farmers’ Cooperative Society (a network of smallholder producers in Nyeri). Peaberry selection means the rounded single-bean cherries are separated for a more concentrated, often sweeter cup.
Taste Profile
-
Aroma: Blackberry/blackcurrant, grapefruit zest, light florals, and a hint of brown sugar.
-
Body: Medium and silky — juicy, with a smooth, tea-like elegance.
-
Flavour: Classic Nyeri punch: sweet blackcurrant and red apple up front, layered with citrus (lime/grapefruit), then a clean black-tea note and a gentle milk-chocolate finish.
-
Sweetness: High, syrupy sweetness — like dried fruit and caramelised sugar.
-
Acidity: Bright and complex, citrus-driven with a malic snap (apple/berry). Lively but very balanced.
